A Cure for Wellness
Hey guys, I am back again with a new review on "A cure for wellness".
A cure for wellness is a psychological thriller by Gore Verbinski (he directed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean Saga and the movie The ring).
Trailer
The plot revolves around Dane Dehaan’s character called Lockhart, who is a smart ambitious wiz, working in a large Financial company in NY. So, the board sends him to retrieve a former employee, by the name Permbroke, from this mysterious wellness center at a remote location in Swiss Alps. He, then, meets Dr. Heinrich Volmer (played by Jason Isaacs a.k.a Lucious Malfoy, to me forever and always) who oversees the facility, and a peculiar girl by the name of Hannah (Mia Goth), a resident in the spa (but not particularly a patient….).
First of all, the movie gives off a sickly atmospheric horror stuck-in-a-state-of-limbo vibe, painted in abandoned hospital colors. However, as impressive as the design and the production was, I think the film was disappointing! Because their control of the tone and the sequence of events left a lot to be desired. The movie was too long (2h30min, I mean, C’mon! that’s way too long for an atmospheric creepy film. My psych can only take much. Okay!!). Also, NOTHING was happening for quite some time, so, I was getting frustrated and agitated for quite some time. If only they would feed me something; enough to sooth the ache; but still, keeps me craving. But that didn’t happen, which is a shame because It had the potential.
The movie had so many good elements (I mean the eels, the torture scene..) and good ideas (the mystery of the healing waters running in the region, the strange fluid kept in a cobalt bottle, the backstory of the clinic, the type of clients attracted to this European clinic) that redeemed the movie a bit. And until the last 30 min; when every puzzle took its place; that the film hits its crescendo and we saw the greatness that could’ve been, one that we deserve.
And it goes without saying, the performances were solid and believable.
However, I would like to point out that, in the beginning you see that he understood that No one is to be trusted. Which is why it irked me, how whenever he manages to uncover something, they lie to him and he just…ROLLS with it. And soon enough, he’s back to square one, and my voice is hoarse shouting “C’mon!”.
Having said all that, and due to my mixed feelings, I give this movie 2.7/5
SO, for every upcoming review, what I will try to do is recommend movies that have similar feel, tone or theme, and that I think you guys might like. Of course, you guys are welcome to pitch in your own recommendations in the comments below.
My recommendations are: The shinning (5/5), Get out (5/5), Shutter island (3.5/5), A clockwork orange (3/5).
