The Incredible Jessica James

Hey guys, welcome back!

First of all, I want to dedicate this review to my cousin Jess, who recommended this movie to me. (I owe you cous!) .

Trailer:

Quick intro:

The Incredible Jessica James is a romantic comedy directed by James C. Strouse and starring Jessica Williams, who plays Jessica a New Yorker in her 20’s and an inspiring playwright. This Jessica character is very smart, passionate and unapologetically blunt. She just came out of a relationship with Damon (Keith Stanfield) and clearly still heartbroken. However, she decides to start dating again and that’s when she meets Boone (Chris O’Dowd, who played the cop in Bridesmaids) a divorced app designer. And together they’ll try to regain some emotional balance in their respective “post-relationship” world.

This movie is fresh and modern in its references which makes it a perfect millennial movie. It speaks to our generation, a generation of online dating and Instagram branding. Jessica represents the better self we wish to be, if not the best friend or girlfriend we want to have (Cause she’s DOPE! \_(*_*)_/). She’s witty, passionate about her work and confident about who she is, and, what she wants to be. She may be a failed playwright who is just trying to make end meet, but she doesn’t waver from her dream. As a matter of fact, she only starts to have doubts in the last 30 min or so of the movie. James C. Strouse deliberately avoided mentioning the circumstances of her break up with Damon or the plays she presumably writes, because that’s not the point. She is resilient and strong not because of the heartbreak or the rejections, but despite of it all.

Despite it being a romantic comedy movie, I think what makes this movie cool is how the “storyline” and subplot go hand in hand rather than a river under a bridge. James C. Strouse dedicates an equal time to follow Jessica and Boone’s relationship and Jessica’s work with her class. Because, as opposed as one might think, her work with her kids wasn’t an outlet for her frustrations but a source of strength. So, you see, all these elements gave this old-fashioned romantic comedy a fresh coat of paint.

My rating is 4/5, since I can’t stress enough how DOPE and FUN this movie is.

My recommendations for Millennials Romantic Comedies: Man Up (fun old fashioned RomCom with a bit an edge; 4/5), obvious child (witty and funny romcom about unplanned pregnancy in your 20’s; 3.5/5), Newness (insightful and strikingly truthful on the Tinder hook up culture; 3/5), Ingrid goes west (a fun dark comedy on Instagram branding culture;4/5).
