It Comes At Night

Welcome Back everyone, here's a belated review of the psychological Horror film and Trey Edward Shults second film "It comes at night". It's about a time after the outbreak of an unidentified disease, where it shows no signs in case of contamination and kills you instantly. The disease left people isolated and fearful, they scrounge for food and water.

Trailer:

The movie barely sets the circumstances for the rest of the plot. It's not clear how the disease came to be, or for how long it's been since the first outbreak, or even the circumstances that left earth in zombie like state. So we, the viewers, are set in the same survival mindset as the characters (we don't need to understand the history, we only need to survive), which is why it was (to me) one of the scariest horror movie of this year. And the reason for it to be so scary is the human elements played out in the movie: the villains were fear, desperation and helplessness. You’re alone, fending off this unknown disease that no one knows its cure. You’re afraid for yourself and for your loved ones because they’re the only things left, you're only holding on a string to your humanity.

The complication started to arise when Will (Christopher Abbott) stumbles upon a cabin where Paul's (Joel Edgerton) family is residing. The latter, have rules to protect themselves: go out in pairs, never go out after dark and always keep the door closed. In order not to spoil the movie any further, all I can say is that every dramatic arc makes you wonder “what would you do in that situation? Salvage whatever scrap of humanity you’ve got left or just go full on survival mode”. The movie just follows these characters trying to re-establish a life in this post-apocalyptic world.

The cinematography here crisp and clean which makes you think in a post-apocalyptic world, in contrary to the popular belief, with the destruction of the infrastructure and the end of technology as we know it nature will prosper again.

My rating: 4.5/5
